It truly was an incredible year in sports and WORLD history. Here are the top 10 upsets of 2016…

#10 Panthers lose the Super Bowl
Cam Newton had the NFL league-high 45 combined touchdowns in the regular season and was able to tack on five more in the NFC playoffs. But even though he dominated the regular season he was not able to score a single touchdown in the SuperBowl because Denver's defense absolutely dominated. Broncos upset the Panthers 24-10.

#9 They said it couldn’t be done but it finally happened… Leonardo DiCaprio finally wins his Oscar. So after 27 years of thriving in Hollywood he gets the gold and the Internet is going to need to create a new Leonardo DiCaprio meme.

#8 Monica Puig takes gold in women's tennis
The Puerto Rican, Monica Puig, came into the Olympics as the 37th-ranked player in the world, yet she was able to defeat second-ranked Angelique Kerber of Germany for the gold medal. This was the first gold medal ever for Puerto Rico.

#7 TCU vs Oregon, Alamo Bowl 2016
It seemed pretty dire and hopeless for TCU at halftime when they trailed Oregon 31-0.  On top of this enormous deficit, TCU was playing without Heisman-candidate QB Trevone Boykin who had been suspended after a bar fight. Bram Kohlhausen, a fifth-year senior, was making his first collegiate start, led his team to score 31 unanswered points in the second half, tying the game with a 22-yard field goal with 19 seconds left. TCU capped off the biggest comeback in bowl game history with an 8-yard TD run in the third overtime for a 47-41 victory.

#6 Texas A&M vs. Northern Iowa (2016 NCAA Tournament)
Northern Iowa dominated the entire second-round game, up by 12 with 44 seconds left. However, Texas A&M refused to quit. They forced Northern Iowa into turnover, and then another turnover. And again! As my CHS coach would have told me, “fellas all we need right now is a stop and a score, and a stop and a score, and a stop and a score. That’s it! Then we win!”  Anyway, the Aggies wiped out the deficit, sending the game into overtime on a steal-and-layup with 1.9 seconds left. Then Texas A&M went on to win in double Over time, 92-88, in the biggest last-minute comeback win in NCAA basketball history.

#5 Villanova defeats #1 North Carolina
#2 Villanova defeats #1 North Carolina 77-74 in the 2016 National Championship on the back of a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Kris Jenkins.

#4 Phelps loses to Singapore swimmer
Joseph Schooling of Singapore bested Michael Phelps in the 100-meter butterfly, beating out the two-time reigning Olympic champion in the event. It was great to see the smiles exchanged between the two men after the event because the two met while Schooling was just a child. Phelps happened to be one of Schooling's idols all growing up. Most importantly, 21-year-old Joseph Schooling made history by winning Singapore's first Olympic gold medal in the 100m butterfly, doing it in an Olympic record time of 50.39s. (- See more at:

#3 Cubs Make History
The Chicago Cubs win the World Series for the first time since 1908. I guess it’s not a total upset since the Cubs were having an amazing season.  But the fact that it hadn’t been done in 108 years, it went to a game 7, with the Cubs surviving a furious comeback and an extra-inning rain delay to knock off the Indians in 10 innings, 8-7, and most importantly beating the curse of the Billy Goat… all that is the reason why it is one of the greatest upsets of 2016, and one of the greatest moments in sports history. (Afterwards, the Cubs parade was one of the biggest public gatherings/celebrations in modern world history!)

#2 Cavs defeat the Warriors in Championship
The Cleveland Cavaliers pulled off the impossible, winning four out of five games against the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals after falling behind 2-0 in the series. This was incredible to watch as no team has EVER come back from trailing 3-1 in an NBA finals. This was after Klay Thompson claimed that their team is better than the showtime lakers. The Cavs victory can largely be attributed to Lebron James’ super-human performance in the final 5 games.

#1 Trump wins President
Donald Trump shocked the world when he won the presidential election in biggest upset in political history.
